Bel Canto: Inside the Music with Renée Fleming, David Majzlin, Anthony Weintraub, and Elena Park

September 16, 2018,  7:30–8:50 pm

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

For the new film Bel Canto, based on Ann Patchett’s award-winning novel, Renée Fleming provides the soprano voice of Roxane Coss (played by Julianne Moore), a renowned diva swept up, along with wealthy Japanese industrialist Hosokawa (Ken Watanabe), in a lengthy hostage crisis in South America. This dramatic love story, directed by Paul Weitz (who also co-wrote the screenplay), unfolds with an arresting score that features classic opera arias as well as original music by David Majzlin. Fleming and Majzlin join Bel Canto’s Anthony Weintraub (producer/co-screenwriter) and Elena Park (music producer) to discuss the film’s creation and its musical components. Ensemble 63 will perform several excerpts from Bel Canto, which will debut in theaters on September 14.
